PROJECT SUMMARY

The Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) seeks to inspire Singaporeans through the arts and sports, engage the youth, strengthen community bonds, and promote giving to build strong bonds and close relationships.
The Problem
With the diverse sectors (e.g. arts, sports and community) as well as the many organisations under MCCY, the current website allows users to explore the different activities organised by various organisations. Users will eventually be directed to another organisation's website to find out more about the activity (e.g. schedule of activity, location, price, etc.). This may be a hassle for activity or initiative seekers as it would lead them to numerous websites.

The Solution
Our redesigned website aims to bridge the gap between MCCY, the organisations under MCCY and users. Users will have more streamlined results which caters to their preference (e.g. date, time or location). Our redesigned website also allows users to access and potentially book any activity without leaving the MCCY's website.

GOING FORWARD
My reflection
-
Working in a group makes me appreciate the shared goals my team aims to achieve. With the diverse creative minds within the team, it was important for us to align and focus on the essentials and prioritise our users.
-
I have learnt to value the voices of my team members, being considerate of what others think or have to say.
-
Working in a team gives me the opportunity to bounce off ideas with another team mate.
-
Given how broad MCCY is, there were moments we faced a roadblock and had to start over / take a few steps back - it is wonderful to have the support of one another and be determined to work on the best possible solution.
-
Coming up with a project timeline gives us a guide on what we should be doing throughout the 2-weeks duration, it gives us room and flexibility to focus on work which scope requires more time.
Future opportunities
-
With the Singpass and Corpass login methods being implemented on other Government-body websites, we see a possibility how both individual and corporate users might consider utilising "Open ID" and "Open Authorisation" for quicker and secure transaction processes.
-
Consideration of an itinerary planning or wish list function for logged in users.
-
Contents for each page could be refined through card sorting activities.

Comparative analysis of activity page
Upon the search users have inputted earlier, users will then be directed to a search result or activity page showing the various activities or events they could potentially attend. We studied the components of other organisations' activity page. These organisations hosts activities and events, some of which are affiliated with MCCY, for example:

Who has API? How did we verify?
We went through the different websites under MCCY to determine the number of organisations with and without API integration, mainly by making a transaction via the organisation's website. If the transaction directs us to an external link, that means it might not have API

Usability Test & Iterations
Did it work?
To test the prototype of our redesigned website, we assigned 6 individuals with a set of tasks to carry out. All 6 testers managed to complete the given tasks successfully. However, there were some findings that were highlighted throughout the test which we iterated.

Key learnings from user & market research
Through our user interviews (of 10 interviewees) and survey (of 30 participants).

Learning #2
Open to participate but too many platforms to compare to suit their availability
%20(11).png)
A number of our interviewees expressed interest to participate or attend sports, arts or community events when they are available. This is further verified from a survey we conducted - 70% are willing to participate despite not being active in the respective sectors.
Learning #1
Informative rather than actionable experience
%20(22).png)
Focusing on the "Get Involved" tab, MCCY's role as a "middle-man" by branching out programs for users to participate hosted by other organisations (e.g. statutory boards and agencies). Further actions such as booking an event, or making a donation require users to access the respective organisation's website, which makes users less affiliated to MCCY.

The activity cards listed in the current MCCY website does not provide schedule details. Users have to browse through each individual sites to find activities that suits their availability.

Enhanced search function
Comparative analyis of search function
When ideating solutions for the redesigned website, we made a comparative analysis of other organisations comparable with MCCY, that has affiliations with other external organisations, for example:
-
Skyscanner, a metasearch engine that allows users to search, compare and book flights and hotels across major travel services in the world;
-
Popcorn, a movie search app that allows users to find movie showtimes and book tickets across movie theatres in Singapore.

Proposed search function
With the elements of feature inventories from other websites' search feature (shown above), we designed a search function that compliments the different sectors (Arts & Heritage, Sports and Community) within MCCY together with a calendar to suit user's preference and availability. This search function enables a more streamline search result which will be shown in the next solution.

Proposed components for activity page
Our redesigned activity page consist of components adopted by other organisations (mentioned above) from comparative analysis (feature inventory). The redesigned activity page allows users to navigate available events on different days from the calendar. The activity cards provide essential details of an event such as location, date and time.

Accessing data from other organisations
Integration of API
In order to make the experience more seamless for users to access data (of activities from other organisations) such as the details shown on the activity cards as well as making transactions (e.g. booking an activity or purchasing an event ticket) without leaving the site, we proposed the integration of an Application Programming Interface (API).
API:
A type of software interface, that allows applications to access data and interact with external software components, or operating systems.
%20(55).png)
The results gathered were pretty close, although there are more organisations without API. Depending on the type of organisation, not all would require an API as it could be more of an informational website. In the current outlook of the project, we might foresee this being a future opportunity when other remaining organisations under MCCY have integrated an API.
